Douglas built a cake to resemble the cover of the album "Unknown Pleasures". He also carved an eraser into a hand stamp for the door that looked the same. And brought out a bunch of books that inspired some of the songs & name of the band.
I thought the gig went well. People had fun & i believe we sounded pretty good. Massive thanks go to Mark Stutman who did sound for us & lent us gear, Mike Ostler who helped set up & lent gear, and Art for doing tonnes of work. Thanks to Meg Mazurek & also the Jr. Mountain Zeroes for playing with us.
I was doing the singing, and i am so used to having an instrument while i'm playing that not having one feels pretty weird. And no, i did not do the dancing - you know that jerky, seizure like arm pumping dancing that was associated with Ian Curtis. I figure that was his thing, and we're a cover band rather than a tribute act.
I recall a year or more back in the comments section of this blog there was a discussion about what songs we should be playing & what ones we should avoid. I am happy to report back that i was right. Ahem. Soapbox time: when you're preparing something for the general public's consumption, if you want them to enjoy it, you've got to give them what they want*. As a cover band, that would include playing songs that a band is best known for, even by folks who know little about the band.
The same could be said for many things in any art.
Otherwise, you might end up with this**.
*note my contradictory stance on the dancing, however
