We went to Stew & Sarah's wedding yesterday in Hamilton. It was held at a place called The Scottish Rite which is a building for Scottish Masons. The wedding was really nice and the reception was awesome. Great food & drink, laid back atmosphere with many old friends in a very cool old building. Stew is a good old friend, Sarah is a really nice & genuine person & it is great to see them so happy. All the best Stew & Sarah!
At one point i got obsessed with finding secret passages, as it seemed like the kind of building where that might be part of the design. People kept egging me on but i think they believed there might be something to the idea. I didn't really find anything but i probably just missed some secret pull-sash or panel in the wainscotting.
We did manage, however, to score a tour of the building. I was asking the bartender about what was down the hall & he said "oh, go check out the ballroom - if the security guard gives you any trouble just say Joe says it's OK". The guard, an elderly man who may have been hard of hearing, did stop us as we headed towards the ballroom (i should mention, that's not ballroom as in Chucky Cheese ballroom, but rather Cinderella ballroom). He didn't want me to bring my drink with me (though Joe had said "sure, go ahead!") so i left it there by his desk. He then showed us the ballroom, and then as an added bonus, took us upstairs to see the Temple where the Masons do all their secret stuff.
People, he spilled the beans*. I'm telling you, we learned more about Scottish Masons in 15 minutes than i would have thought possible. The Temple itself was a pretty amazing room. They are fully set up as a theatre - as an example, they had over 30 flys up in the rafters ready to lower down for all sorts of plays, scenes, etc. We saw all sorts of strange artifacts hanging about the place.
I know you're dying to ask - did we learn the handshake? Well, no, we didn't. They wouldn't tell us that one key piece of information.
Or at least that's what they told me to say.
*The nameless security guard truly did no such thing. Now see the sentence above.
